Clear opioid-related deaths fell 17% across Canada in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to new federal data.
However, they rose up in Quebec, Newfoundland, Labrador and the Northwest Territories at the same time.
A new report by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction says opioid toxic deaths remain “very high” despite a decline in deaths across Canada.
In 2024, there were 7,150 obvious opioid-related deaths in Canada, an average of 20 per day.

British Columbia reported the most deaths of 2,299 people. Ontario saw 2,231 deaths and Alberta reported 1,181 opioid-related deaths, while all three provinces reported a decline compared to 2023.
Quebec ranked fourth in 2024 with 645 deaths, up from the 536 reported in 2023, more than double the number of deaths in 2022.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, 45 people died in 2024, starting from 37 in 2024 in 2023.
The Northwest Territory reported six deaths last year, up from three in 2023.
