TORONTO – Canadian baseball fans shouldn't expect a repeat deal that will allow Sportsnet to air Friday night baseball broadcasts on Apple TV, featuring the Toronto Blue Jays last week.

As a result of the contract, the streamer was given the right to this Friday game between the Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. Matchup could become a potential division clincher in Toronto.

“It's exclusive to Apple,” a SportsNet spokesperson said in an email Thursday afternoon.

Sportsnet, the domestic rights holder of Canadian teams, signed contracts with Blue Jays, Apple TV and Major League Baseball ahead of last Friday's game between Toronto and Kansas City.

That matchup could have become a Blue Jays playoff clincher. The Royals hit Toronto 20-1 that night, but the Blue Jays secured a postseason berth two days later.

A similar scenario exists this week. Depending on the outcome of Thursday's match, the Blue Jays had a chance to win the American League East Division title for the first time since 2015 on Friday.

However, instead of airing on SportsNet, Jays-Rays matchups only appear on Apple TV+, with non-assistants not having a display option.

There were no plans to change the arrangement, baseball sources confirmed Thursday.

Almost all Blue Jays games will air on Sportsnet, but as part of Streamer's partnership with MLB, there will be a handful of Toronto games through 162 game season air on Apple TV+.

On entering play on Thursday, the Blue Jays had four magic numbers to clinch the East. Toronto was tied to the New York Yankees in first place, but the Blue Jays retain their tiebreaker advantage.

The Friday clinching scenario was certainly possible, but it seemed unlikely.

Toronto won the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night, coupled with New York's defeat to the Chicago White Sox, trimmed the Blue Jays' magic numbers into two.

However, the slump's Blue Jays entered the series finale against the Red Sox, who returned to the East, taking six of their last seven games to the series finale.

On Friday, the Blue Jays Raids game will begin minutes after the start of the Yankees Orioles matchup. If Toronto joins that game with two magical numbers, the Blue Jays defeat the Rays and claim the East Crown if New York loses to Baltimore.

The regular season continues until Sunday.

Top 2 Division winners will win a Buy in the Best Five Division Series. The other four AL playoff teams will play in three wildcard series.

Toronto made the three playoffs between 2020 and 23, but was dominated by the Wild Card Series every time.

The Blue Jays have not won postseason games since 2016. Toronto's final World Series title appeared in 1993.
