Rio de Janeiro – Former President Jae Bolsonaro's doctor said Wednesday that he detected early stage cancer of skin lesions removed from a 70-year-old politician following his conviction over an attempted coup.
Bolsonaro was under house arrest in Brasilia until his sentence was finalized and has been in hospital twice since the court's ruling on Thursday. He went to DF Star Hospital on Sunday and removed eight lesions again on Tuesday due to vomiting and hypotension before being released on Wednesday.
The results showed early stage skin cancer in two lesions, doctors added in a statement Wednesday that Bolsonaro would need clinical monitoring and regular reevaluation.
“My dad has already fought a tougher battle and won. This will not change anything,” Bolsonaro's eldest son Flavio said in a post on X.
A Supreme Court judges' committee on Thursday found that despite the 2022 election defeat to current President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, he committed the charge of attempting a coup to illegally sticking to power. They were sentenced to him in prison for 27 years and three months.
This sentence does not immediately send Bolsonaro to prison. The court panel will have up to 60 days to make the judgment public after it has been decided. Once, Bolsonaro's lawyers submit a five-day move for clarification.
Bolsonaro denied the misconduct and said he was a victim of political persecution. US President Donald Trump agreed, calling the trial a “witch hunt,” and in July he imposed a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, citing the lawsuit against Bolsonaro, among other issues.
The former president since early August said he was under house arrest imposed by justice overseeing the lawsuit, and that Borsaro violated the precautions imposed on him in the context of the trial.
Bolsonaro was already wearing an ankle monitor. This is the action that came into effect after federal police said he and his MP Eduardo were working with US authorities to obtain sanctions against Brazilian civil servants on alleged persecution.
In late August, De Moraes further strengthened its security measures and ordered police to leave their Bolsonaro residence and inspect all vehicles monitoring the exterior of the home.
Bolsonaro has been hospitalized multiple times since being stabbed at a campaign event prior to the 2018 presidential election. In April he had surgery for intestinal obstruction.
Rather than requiring him to serve his sentence at a detention center, Bolsonaro's lawyers are expected to advance his illness with a house arrest plea.
