Apple Maps users could start seeing ads in the app as early as next year, according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Garman.
Similar to Google Maps and other mapping apps, Garman said Apple's plan is to allow brick-and-mortar restaurants and other businesses to pay to advertise themselves in search results. Apple already runs ads in the App Store, but this could be part of a larger strategy to bring more ads to iOS.
Apple is reportedly trying to differentiate itself from its competitors with a better interface and using AI to display relevant results.
The question, Garman said, is whether Apple device owners will start to rebel as Apple's devices and apps increasingly become billboards trying to convince them to pay for Apple services.
