Vancouver Island firefighters say “significant” amounts of rain have helped them advance to fight the uncontrolled wildfires burning south of Port Alberni, BC

The BC Wildfire Service says crews have seen improvements in the Mount Underwood Wildfire, bringing minimal fire growth in the past 24 hours after receiving more than 30 millimeters of rain since Thursday.

Kiah Allen, operations chief at Mount Underwood Wildfire at Coastal Fire Center, said in an operational update on Friday that the next three days will see good progress when crews are easing to weather.

The Alberni Crayocott area on Vancouver Island said in the post Saturday that crews are focusing their efforts on the north and northwest of the fire, and hopes to include more areas closest to Port Alberni.

Employment Minister Patty Hajidou ordered Canada to fly Canada and attacked flight attendants and returned to work.

The service says the weather helps calm the fire behavior and cause safer conditions for crew members, but it says heavy rain can also lead to slope instability, rocks and dangerous trees.

The local district says that the rain doesn't mean it's safe to enter the evacuation order zone due to the risk of fallen trees and rocks, and it's important for residents to leave the evacuation order zone.

The fire cut off electricity and major road access to Huu-ay-Aht's First Nation, where traditional territory includes Bumfield. The district says there are about 55 electric poles burned down, with unknown timelines for full recovery.

Approximately 80 fires are burning across the state, including four that are out of control.
