Three children have died in Ontario from complications related to influenza A since early December, health officials say.
The Eastern Ontario Health Authority said in a notice Monday that the children are between the ages of five and nine. They were in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario Health Authority region.
“This is a clear reminder that influenza can cause serious illness and complications that require hospital treatment,” it said.

“With most of the respiratory disease season still a long way off, we expect to continue to have a tough flu season.”
So far this year, Ontario has seen a rapid and significant increase in influenza A infections across Ontario, including within the province, the health authority said.

“Vaccinations are especially important for children at this time of year when serious illnesses are on the rise. Parents and caregivers can protect their children by getting themselves vaccinated,” the health department said in a notice.
“It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective, so getting vaccinated now can help protect you during the busy holiday season, when influenza activity often increases. Vaccines don't always prevent infection, but they still offer strong protection against severe illness, hospitalization, and complications.”
