Two civilians were killed in Ukraine's attack on Russia's Belgorod border area, but the man was killed in the bombardment in eastern Ukraine, officials said.
Belgorod's governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on the Telegram messaging app that a woman was killed when artillery bombardment struck private property in the border town of Shebekino.
Since Moscow launched a full-scale Ukraine invasion in February 2022, Ukraine and the adjacent Belgorod region have frequently faced cross-border attacks.
In Ukraine, a man was killed and residential buildings and infrastructure were damaged by Russian artillery fire at Kostiantinibka in the Donetsk region of Serhiy Khorvnov, the city's military junta chief.
The latest attack comes after Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack targeting area across Ukraine on Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring dozens. Russia fired 619 drones and missiles during the attack, the Ukrainian Air Force said.
Also on Saturday, Estonia summoned a Russian diplomat, protesting after three Russian fighters entered the airspace without permission on Friday and stayed there for 12 minutes. More than a week has happened when NATO planes defeated Russian drones over Poland, raising fears that the war in Ukraine could ripple over.
Ukrainian Voldy Mie Zelensky, who wrote on social media site X on Sunday, said Ukraine had “more than 1,500 strike drones, over 1,280 guided air bombs and 50 missiles of various types were targeted the previous week.
Noting that “thousands of foreign elements” were discovered with Russian weapons, Zelenkie said Ukraine “relies on the US to join Europeans to make the 19th EU sanctions package truly painful.” European Commission's Ursula von der Leyen announced the sanctions package on Friday.
Zelenskyy hopes to meet President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, and hopes to measure Ukraine and its partners finalizing long-term security assurances.
On Sunday morning in an exchange with reporters, Trump addressed Russia's invasion into Estonia's airspace very easily.
“We don't like it,” Trump said. Asked if the US would support Poland and other Baltic countries if the US continues to face Russian attacks, Trump replied, “I will.”
Russia's Ministry of Defense on Saturday denied that the aircraft had violated Estonian airspace.
